        Hi Sara,

I noticed that you have a new computer with a much larger screen!

        Dear Ms. Leib:

I am a chanter in the Eastern Orthodox Church; I would say that at least 50% of my practical (and at least some of my theoretical) knowledge of general singing comes from your excellent and enjoyable videos.

One problem that I face in the role of chanter is that of working in an incense-filled church, probably not unlike a smoky jazz-club from the lungs’ point of view. Moreover, at some services the celebrants are theoretically not supposed to have eaten or drunk anything since the previous midnight. So if throat-clearing and coughing are also bad, as seems reasonable, what would you suggest?

        Hi, Norman,

Thanks so much for your kind words. I’m thrilled you’re learning from the SingingtV.com videos! What you’re talking about is a very real problem. I’ve run into similar situations singing in jazz clubs in other countries. The reason throat-clearing and coughing aren’t good for the voice is because they build up a lot of air pressure sub-glotally, and then press the cords together much more forcefully than we want to on a regular basis. That said, if you need to cough, you probably should, as it’s generally because there’s something in the lungs that wants to come out or extra mucus on the cords. Remember, Ep. 102 is talking about CHRONIC throat clearing and coughing, for people who do that habitually or unnecessarily. If you’re in a smoky environment, I’d say keeping water unhand is important. If you’re fasting, that’s going to be a little harder. :/
